Depending on the reader's familiarity with literary criticism of the last century, this is either an oblique or obvious rejection of literary theorists who believe there is 'no outside-the-text'. Even the current vogue of New Historicism is problematic - instead, Mr. Dickstein states that "The work in this book belongs to a different tradition, intuitive, experiential, historicist and 'semi-sociological' in the older way."For those who care about such things, this is an important distinction that Mr. Dickstein is making. It is a mission statement of sorts; an insistence on the ability of literature to reflect in meaningful ways the world's inner and outer realities, instead of readings that treat the text as closed loop language games, or else as evidence confirming unequal treatment of society's historically disenfranchised. Although Mr. Dickstein acknowledges that these latter ideological methods have both their opportunity for abuse and enlightenment, his critical objective with 'A Mirror in the Roadway' is to bring the reader and the novel together, and help illustrate the way these texts "renew the world by refreshing our perception of it."As an Interested Reader, and not in any way affiliated with academia, this is the only sort of critical intention that I'm open to. Unfortunately, intention is merely an attitude - the greatest service a critic can provide is when he transmits his enthusiasm for a work while exposing contingencies readers may not have been aware of, and which then may become a starting point for their own investigations. In his examination of realism in the 20th century, Mr. Dickstein covers such disparate authors as Theodore Dreiser and Upton Sinclair; Samuel Beckett and Franz Kafka; Saul Bellow and Phillip Roth; Raymond Carver and many others - and yet, though these authors matter deeply to Mr. Dickstein, his treatment of them failed to impart any sense of urgency, any excitement about their subjects. This may have been because of the book's inflection on realism, and by concentrating on that aspect, Mr. Dickstein may have had to sacrifice some of his enthusiasm to make his point. The only partial exceptions were his mention of George Orwell's 'Homage to Catalonia', and the work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, both of which were already on my list to read.In the end, Mr. Dickstein's best work in this collection may be his preface and introduction, and his concluding essay, 'The Limits of Historicism: Literary Theory and Historical Understanding'. In these pages, Mr. Dickstein not only stakes out his own critical ground, but also outlines the very thing I look for in criticism - "the kind...that advances literacy, cherishes style, and honors clarity as it mediates between literature and its audience." Regardless of the effectiveness of this particular book of essays on me, that statement of purpose makes any collection of Mr. Dickstein's worth seeking out.See all 1 customer reviews...
